New graduate students
Graduate privileges are not always given automatically upon registration. Graduate students should check with Circulation Services staff to assure that they are receiving appropriate privileges.
Graduate Students not registered: Graduate students not registered for the current semester will appear as expired users in the circulation system. Upon request, alumnus status will be granted. This status must be renewed each term. Alumni may borrow most materials for three weeks. Other loan periods are listed below. Upon registration, the student must notify the library if graduate checkout privileges are desired. Contact circulation services for more information.
Patrons may use the MSU Library Catalog to place holds on materials checked out by another person. When the materials are returned, notice is sent to the borrower who made the request indicating that the materials are now available for use. Materials will be held for one week only.
When a hold has been placed, materials may be recalled any time after an item has been checked out longer than three weeks. Materials needed for reserve may be recalled at any time. Patrons are given a reasonable time to return recalled materials. If recalled materials are not returned by the prescribed date, a hold will be placed on the borrower's records. Recalled materials cannot be renewed.
FOUR WAYS TO RENEW LIBRARY MATERIALS
This is the easiest way to renew. Go to: Your Borrowing Record
Fill in the 14-digit barcode from your MavCARD:
Fill in last name or first 8 letters of last name (faculty, staff, and students prior to Fall 2005):
Select Log On. Select Loans. Select the number to the left of the item you wish to renew. On the next screen select the word Renew in the middle of the page. When new due date appears on the screen, the renewal is successfully completed.
If the renewal cannot be processed, an explanation will appear on the screen. You may request assistance from Access Services on second floor of Memorial Library --507-389-5064 or 507-389-5472.
You must bring your MavCARD card to the Circulation Desk. You need not bring the items you are attempting to renew.
Prior to the due date for your material send a renewal request containing your name, your MSU barcode (a 20101...number) and the item barcode (a 30101...number on the item) for each item you wish to renew to email@example.com. You will receive an email reply to your renewal request.
If you wish to renew your library materials by mail, at least one week prior to your due date send a card or letter containing your name, your MSU barcode, and the item barcode (the 30101...number on the item) for each item you wish to renew to:

If another library user has placed a hold on an item you have borrowed, you will not be able to renew it. Faculty and graduate students having semester-long borrowing privileges should note that if another borrower places a hold on an item checked out for the semester, the circulation period may be shortened, the due date may change, and the item must be returned by the new date. Borrowers are notified if this occurs.
an item is overdue...
An item which has not been returned or renewed within 10 days of its due date is subject to a replacement charge as well as a $10.00 per item, non-refundable overdue processing fee. Once the replacement charges and processing fees have been assessed, the item may not be renewed. Replacement charges are dismissed once an overdue item is returned, but the $10.00 per item processing fee is not dismissed once it has been assessed. Avoid this overdue penalty by returning or renewing your materials in a timely manner.
DVDs, Videotapes, and Music CDs check out for 7 days and may NOT be renewed.
RENEW INTERLIBRARY LOAN MATERIALS
Responsibility for the prompt return of materials is placed on the borrower. Materials not renewed or returned by the due date are considered overdue and are subject to an overdue service charge. A hold will be placed on the academic records of anyone who has not returned materials or equipment and/or paid overdue service charges in accordance with library policies. Persons whose records have holds placed on them will not be allowed to register, receive transcripts, or grades. Holds on records may be cleared by paying the overdue service charge in the MSUM Business Office.
All costs for lost or unreturned materials and equipment will be charged to the person in whose name they were checked out.
See list below. Patrons are responsible for noting the due date on borrowed materials and equipment. Generally, materials can be checked out according to the following loan periods. Material can be renewed online through Your Borrowing Record or by mail, e-mail, fax, or in person. Short term loans that are overdue will accumulate fines. Borrowers will be billed for lost or overdue materials. A non-refundable processing fee of $10 per item is assessed for all billed materials.
