This one was done with tongue in cheek.
Our
department is on the fifth floor and it is amazing how many students
never
make it this far. My display case is a wall display on the second floor
of
our library. It is almost 8 feet long and about 3 feet tall, 10 inches
deep.
I don't generally use any shelves, but have on occasion. The
intention
was to let students know what is available in the Documents Department.
I'm
afraid the word "documents" gives visions of uninteresting
legal-type
papers. I used some scrap material purchased at a garage sale,
newspaper,
clothes-hangers, craft hair, styrofoam egg, a boa and a photo copy of
Mae
West's face and put together an eye-catching figure from the past. If
nothing
else, it brought them close enough to the display to see the types of
information our department has available and perhaps gave them a
different conception of what to expect. I just browsed the stacks
and picked as many subject matters as I had room for and tried to pick
the ones that had interesting or colorful covers. As you know, about
the only books we receive with wonderful jackets are from the
Smithsonian.
