Abstract:

This collection tells the story of Cora Sletten, who was a geography professor at Mankato State Teachers College. The majority of the collection is comprised of journals, which document twenty-five years of her life. The collection also includes photographs of Ms. Sletten and her friends and family over the years.

Biographical Note:

Cora Sletten was born in 1885. She graduated from Carlton College, and in 1923 she graduated from the University of Chicago with an M.S. in geography. She taught geography at Mankato State Teachers College from 1923-1953. "Ms. Sletten received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Council of Geography Educators in 1953 and the Carlton College Distinguished Service Award in 1971 in recognition of alumni achievement. She was President of the National Council, and served for many years as assistant editor of the Journal of Geography."1 She died in 1974.

Scope and Content:

This collection in divided into two different series: journals and photographs. These series are further arranged chronologically whenever possible.

Journals: The journals are between the dates 1946-1971. They cover an area of over twenty-five years. Some were written during her tenure as a geography professor at Mankato State Teachers College, and some were written after she retired. Her journals cover her day-to-day life during the above years. She discusses the local and national news worthy events that she witnessed. She also mentions events that took place in the classroom on certain days.

Photographs: This series is comprised of photographs of Cora Sletten, people she was close to, and family members. These photographs are dated from1893-1959. Many of these photographs are undated. The early photographs of her were taken when she was a young girl and when she graduated from college. There is a group of postcards in this series that were of places that she had visited. There are also photographs that show her at the height of her career. The later photographs reflect her as a retired person.
