Abstract:

The American Indian audiocassette collection consists of fifteen tapes pertaining to the life and culture of the Yurok Indians of California and a Social Studies Conference held in the Centennial Student Union on the upper campus of Mankato State College during 5 and 6 February 1971. The purpose of the conference was to make the community "aware of the problems [facing American Indians] in an effort to explain misunderstood concepts." Some of the speakers were Edward Benton, Assistant Director of the American Indian Movement (AIM); Clyde Bellecourt and Dennis Banks of AIM; Dick Wolf, a Bureau of Indian Affairs official; and Sterling Snake, a tribal council member from Winnebago, Nebraska.

Scope and Content:

The recordings of the Social Studies Conference for Sociology 3354 consist of 15 tapes, 6 originals and 9 duplicates. No transcriptions are currently available.

Tape One - Yurok Indians (1 Cassette:
Tapes one and two concern the Yurok Indians of California. The first of these two tapes contains information compiled by the National Association of Educational Broadcasters and mentions Walter Goldschmidt an anthropologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. This includes a "play" entitled the "Life of Yurok" The other side is the "Reluctant Shaman," but it is unintelligible.

Tape Two - Ways of Mankind (1 Cassette):
Tapes one and two concern the Yurok Indians of California. The second tape is entitled "Sea Monster and the Bride." Side two is called "World Renewal."

Tape Three - American Indian Movement (3 duplicate cassettes):
This cassette contains a recording of a panel that includes Clyde Bellecourt, the first speaker; George Mitchell, second speaker; Dennis Banks, third speaker; and Edward (Ed) Benton, the fourth speaker.

Tape Four - American Indian Movement (3 duplicate cassettes):
This tape is a continuation of the previous tape. The main speaker is Ed Benton.

Tape Five - Indians on the Reservation (2 duplicate cassettes):
This is a recording of a panel discussion concerning problems on American Indian reservations. The speakers are in order of presentation: Frank Lapoint, newspaper editor from Rosebud, South Dakota; John Popeheart, member of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Commission; Louis Larose, council member from Winnebago, Nebraska; and Sterling Snake, council member from Winnebago, Nebraska.

Tape Six - Further Remarks on the Reservation (5 duplicate cassettes):
These tapes contain remarks from Jerry Flute, a council member from Lake Traverse Reservation in South Dakota, along with other panel members who answered audience questions. Questions from the audience are unintelligible.
