The Bert Earl Burns collection contains an oral history interview and transcript of an interview conducted by Boyd Boyum with Burns in February 1979. In the interview, Burns recalled his experiences of becoming an educator and teaching public school in rural Kenosha County, Wisconsin during the 1930s.

Biographical Note:

Bert Earl Burns was born in Preston, Iowa on 2 May 1915. He began teaching in a one-room schoolhouse Kenosha County, Wisconsin in 1935. After serving in the military during World War II, he earned his B.A. degree in History from Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. Following his B.A., Burns obtained his M.A. from the University of Nebraska. The degree gained Burns a faculty position in the Geography Department at Mankato State Teachers College in 1950. Later, Burns earned his Ph. D. from Nebraska. Besides his teaching duties, he served as the Department of Geography Chairman until his retirement in June 1977.
