The Stuart F. MacDonald collection contains 2 audiocassette tapes, CD duplicates of the audiocassettes, and a transcript of an interview conducted between Steve Johnson and MacDonald in June 1981. MacDonald taught in physical education in the Marshall High School from 1946 until retiring in 1981. In the interview, he recalled his family’s history, his journey into teaching, the growth of Marshall, Minnesota after 1946, the decline in school discipline, the tragic death of Merrill Olson, the school’s principal, changes in education, and his dislike of modular scheduling.

Biographical Note:

Stuart F. MacDonald was born in Elbow Lake, Minnesota on 2 March 1919. In 1936, MacDonald graduated from Shakopee High School and did a year-s worth of postgraduate in Shakopee. MacDonald enrolled at the University of Minnesota after leaving Shakopee. In college, he majored in physical education and played football and basketball. MacDonald graduated college in the spring of 1942 and shortly thereafter married Dorothy Nell Sand in 1942. The MacDonalds had five children between 1945 and 1960: Sanford, 1945; Linda, 1947; Maureen, 1949; Jim, 1956; and Mary, 1960. During the years 1942 - 1946, he served in the United States Army and remained stateside. After being decommissioned, he and his family moved to Marshall, Minnesota, and he began teaching physical education in the fall of 1946. He remained the school's gym teacher until 1981.
