Abstract:

The Robert M. Regan collection contains one cassette tape and a transcription of an interview conducted in 1977 between Regan and Bruce L. Larson and Karin Thiem at the Southern Minnesota Historical Center, Mankato, Minnesota. In the interview, Regan recalled the political career of John E. Regan, Robert Regan's father, who was a state representative from Blue Earth County, Minnesota in 1931 -1932. Regan discussed national politics, the Depression and the New Deal and explained their impacts on his father's career in Minnesota politics. In addition to reminiscing about his father's ambition to become Minnesota's governor and United States Senator, Regan recalled portions of his family's history.

Historical Note:

In 1930, John E. Regan, Robert Regan's father, won election to the Minnesota House of Representatives from Blue Earth County. In 1932 and again in 1934, he unsuccessfully opposed Floyd B. Olson. Regan campaigned for a seat in the United States Senate in 1940, but he lost to Henrik Shipstead. During the 1944 Presidential election, Regan split with the newly formed Democratic-Farmer-Labor party to lead the "Democrats for Dewey" party.
