Abstract:

The Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Center (LGBC) collection contains information collected over a twenty-nine year period at Minnesota State University. The collection consists of four series: correspondence and office records, newspaper clippings, events, miscellaneous items, and memorabilia. Each series is arranged by topic and chronological order. The collection contains information about the history of the organization in Mankato and battles against discrimination, newspaper clippings collected over two decades concerning gays and lesbians at the national and local levels, campus events, miscellaneous pictures, correspondence, and sixty-six pins related to issues deemed important by the LGBC's membership.

Historical Note:

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Center began in 1977 under the leadership of Jim Chalgren, a graduate student at Mankato State University. The organization attempted to provide support, resources, activities, and information to the institution's student body. In the process, the LGBC became one of the first organizations of its kind on university campuses. During the Center's history, the organization has held numerous names ranging from the Alternative Lifestyles Office to the Gay Concerns Office.

The historical information was obtained from the collection.

Scope and Content:

Five series make up the structure of this collection: correspondence and office records, newspaper clippings, events, miscellaneous items, and memorabilia.

Correspondence and Office Records: These records contain some official and unofficial correspondence and documents of Jim Chalgren and other individuals along with the logs of telephone calls to and from the LGBC, letters, and thank you's.

Newspaper Clippings: LGBC workers compiled these clippings from a variety of newspapers. The topics collected concern issues related to the rights of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals.

Events: Information in this series contains documentation on E. H. D. programs, Eliminate Hate programs, a vigil held following the murder of Mathew Shepard, and items related to musical events.

Miscellaneous: These documents contain information on the history of the LGBC and its founder Jim Chalgren, publications and policy statements, reports by the governor of Minnesota, posters, and a large sympathy card intended for the family of Mathew Shepard.

Memorabilia: This series contains a door nameplate for the Gay Lesbian Concerns office, a leaflet from the Millennium March on Washington, ten pins related to LGBC events, twelve pins for Minnesota issues, twelve pins for political topics, twenty-three pins on miscellaneous subjects, and ten pins concerning political causes important to the membership of the LGBC.

Restrictions:

There are no restrictions on use of this collection for research purposes. The researcher assumes full responsibility for observing all copyright, property and libel laws as they apply.
