Abstract:

The Loy Young collection consists of an audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and a biographical form and interview outline of an oral history interview conducted between Young and Joni Myers in July 2007. In this interview, Young talks about high school, his military career, his time as a student at Mankato State College, and his experience as Assistant Football Coach and teaching in the Health department at Mankato State University.

This oral history interview was conducted as part of the Tell Your MSU Story Oral History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical Note:

Loy Young was born January 21, 1923 in Sumner, Iowa. His family moved to Mankato where he attended Teachers College High School and graduated in 1940. He attended Mankato State Teachers College until World War II when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. When Young was released from the Air Force, he returned to Mankato State Teachers College where he was the captain of the basketball team. He graduated in 1947 with a double major in physical education and social studies and a minor in biology. Young went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Education from Oregon State University. He eventually returned to Mankato State College as Assistant Football Coach and also taught in the Health department. He retired in 1984. Young married while in the service and had three children, two of whom are Minnesota State University graduates.
