The Mason collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Mason and Grace Mlady in 2003. In this interview, Mason talks about his service in the 1st Marine Scout Dog Platoon in the United State Marine Corps. He talks about his service during the Vietnam War in the Danang region. Topics include being wounded, family members in the service, protests at home, service in the scout dog platoon, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), returning home and life after the service.

This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Biographical Note:

James Mason was born on December 29, 1945 in Mankato, MN. Mason served in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1969 where he achieved the rank of Gunnery Sergeant . Mason served during the Vietnam War as part of the 1st Marine Scout Dog Platoon. Following active duty, Mason served in the Marine Corp Reserves. Mason now lives in Mankato.
