This collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Gregg W. Asher and Aaron Brownlee and Andrew Fasching in November 2003. Asher served in the United States Army during Vietnam in the 23rd Infantry Division, known as the Americal Division. He discusses his training, his experiences in Vietnam, and life in the United States when he returned. Asher was trained as a Quartermaster and achieved the rank of E-5.
This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Gregg W. Asher was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1946. He attended college for a few years then enlisted in the United States Army. He chose the Quartermaster Corp for his specialized training. In Vietnam he was assigned to the 23rd Infantry Division, known as the Americal Division, where he worked with the motor pool. He served in the Army from March 1968-March 1971. In 1978 Asher developed Type 2 Diabetes which is attributed to his time in Vietnam. Asher took advantage of GI Bill benefits once he was incapacitated by the Diabetes. He received a Bachelors Degree in Accounting and a Master's Degree in Open Studies. He received a PhD from the University of Minnesota. Asher is married and is a professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He lives in Mankato, Minnesota.
