The Tom D. Barna collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview between Barna and Grace Mlady in November 2003. Barna served in the United States Marine Corps during the Gulf War and as a reservist he served in Operation Enduring Freedom. He talks about his time in the service in Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Hawaii. He also talks about the differences between military life and civilian life.
This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Tom D. Barna was born in McKees Rock, Pennsylvania in 1957. Growing up in a military family and traveling all over, Barna joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 24. After attending basic training, he was assigned to Okinawa, Japan for 3 years with the First Track Vehicle Battalion. When he returned to the United States he became a Selection Officer in Corvallis, Oregon for 3 years. He then served in the Brigade Service Support Group in Hawaii for a total of 3 years. During that time Barna spent 10 months in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. Today Barna lives in Eagle Lake, Minnesota with his wife and kids. He works for the Minnesota Department of Transportation and still serves as a Reservist. He is a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
