The Ruth E. Pleiss collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview between Pleiss and Daardi Sizemore in October 2003. Pleiss served in the Army as a nurse during World War II. She talks about her time in the service and about her life and work she did at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Pleiss was discharged from the Army as First Lieutenant.
This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Ruth E. Pleiss was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1920. Following her older siblings into the military, she joined the Army in 1945. Pleiss went to Fort Carter, Camp Carson, Colorado for basic training and then to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where she served for about a year. After being discharged in 1946, she stayed in the Reserves until 1964. While in the Reserves she attend school at the University of Minnesota where she met her husband. After a year of schooling, she quit and moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota where she lives today. She continued her career in nursing and is a member to the American Legion.
