The Audreene Smith collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Smith and Kellian Clink in 2002. It also contains photographs from Smiths time in the service. Smith served in the Army Nurses Corps during World War II. She talks about her time in the service and her time in Germany working in the 121st General Hospital. Smith served for 2 years and was discharged as 1st Lieutenant.
This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Audreene (Olson) Smith was born in Hartland, Minnesota in 1921. Before enlisting in March 1945, Smith was a Registered Nurse. She attended basic training at Camp Carson, Colorado and was then sent to several places around the United States where she worked as a head nurse. Eventually, she was shipped to Germany. Whenever she had time off, she traveled around and saw the country. Smith served 2 years and was discharged in December 1946 as 1st Lieutenant. She returned home and went to work as a Nurse at the Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Smith now lives in New Richland, Minnesota and attends a Veteran's group once a month.
