The Marjorie J. Lukecart collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Lukecart and Daardi Sizemore in 2002. Lukecart served in the United States Navy WAVES during World War II. She talks about life in the Navy and her experiences at the naval hospital at St. Albans in Long Island, New York. Lukecart achieved Pharmacist's Mate 2nd Class.
This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Marjorie J. Lukecart was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota in 1924. While attending school at the University of Minnesota, she enlisted into the Navy and dropped out of school. She attended Boot Camp at Hunter College in New York and served at the U.S. Naval Hospital at St. Albans in Long Island, New York. While she was there, she married a man she went to high school with. In December 1945, after 20-21 months, she got out of the service and returned to Albert Lea, Minnesota with her husband. Lukecart went back to college at Mankato, where she received her Master's degree and six-year specialist in Education. She taught school for 16 years and then moved to Special Education Administration where she worked for 14 years. Lukecart currently lives in Albert Lea and belongs to the Women Veteran's of Freeborn County.
