The Shirley A. Eustis collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Eustis and Daardi Sizemore in 2002. Eustis served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. She talks about her military life in the U.S. and Wales. She also talks about the people she met and the friends she made. Eustis discusses her life after the war and her work with the American Legion and women's Auxiliary.
This oral history interview was conducted as part of the South Central Minnesota Veterans History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Shirley A. Eustis was born in Hayward, Minnesota in 1936. While living in Albert Lea, Minnesota, Eustis enlisted into the Air Force shortly after high school at the age of 18. She enlisted in 1954 near the end of the Korean War and served in various locations in the United States, Wales, and London. While in London, Eustis met her ex-husband who also served in the Air Force. They were married and when he chose to come home she felt she should get out of the military as well. When she returned to the U.S. in 1957, she moved to Pennsylvania where they had 4 children and lived for 17 years. Eustis moved back to Hayward, Minnesota and then eventually to Albert Lea where she lives today. She is a Nursing Assistant at St. John's in Albert Lea and has been there for the last 21 years. In 1991-1992, Eustis became Commander of Post 56 American Legion. She is still semi-active in the American Legion and women's Auxiliary today.
