The Mankato News, Mankato, Minnesota. Collection, 1920 - 1965. SMHC Manuscript Collection 154. 1/2 Hollinger box, 4 Newspaper boxes, and 29 Volumes.
The Mankato News collection contains both correspondence concerning the newspaper, 1932 - 1965, and miscellaneous issues of the newspaper itself, 1920 - 1958. The newspaper's information covered issues related to the Mankato area. Furthermore, the paper contained numerous articles about Minnesota State Senator Val Imm who coincidently served as the paper's publisher, editor, and owner between 1927 and 1958.
Beginning in 1918, The Union News, an organ of the Non-Partisan League, was published on a weekly basis by a joint group of men in Mankato, Minnesota. In the early 1920's the paper was renamed The Telegram. In 1924, it became The Mankato News when the Mankato Publishing Co., a cooperative effort of a number of Mankato business leaders, bought the newspaper. This organization ran the paper until June of 1924 when A. J. Imm became the owner and manager. Imm operated the newspaper until November 1926 when Val and Sam Imm became the proprietors. In October 1927, Val Imm became the owner, editor, and publisher. He continued to publish the newspaper on a weekly basis until the paper's termination on 1 January 1958.
The collection is divided into three sections: Correspondence, Loose Editions, and Bound Editions.
Correspondence, 1932 - 1965:The correspondence pertains entirely to the business of The Mankato News while under the ownership of Val Imm. The section is arranged chronologically and contains letters concerning publication prices, subscription rates, equipment prices, job applications, and advertising rates.
Loose Editions, 1952 - 1958: These issues comprise the complete set of newspapers between 1953 and 1957. In addition, several miscellaneous issues of The Mankato Buyer, a shopping flyer distributed by the newspaper, are included.
Bound Editions, 1920 - 1952: These volumes contain several miscellaneous copies of The Union News dating from 1920 to 1922 and a complete set of The Mankato News from 1924 to 1952.
