The Benjamin F. Smith collection contains the special orders issued by or during Smith's command of a Civil War military training camp at Fort Snelling. Furthermore, it includes pay rolls, muster rolls, special orders, and financial records dating from his service as commander of the militia for Blue Earth County in the Dakota Conflict.
Benjamin F. Smith (1811-1892) served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Minnesota Third Infantry Regiment in the Civil War. Smith was the Commander of the militia for Blue Earth County District during the Dakota Conflict of 1862. Later, he served as a member of the Minnesota state legislature between 1870-1871.
