Abstract:

The Candace Bell collection consists of an audiocassette and transcript for an oral history interview conducted between Bell and Audrey Heil during the spring of 1987. At the time of the interview, Bell worked as a sixth grade teacher at Hoover Elementary School in North Mankato, Minnesota. Throughout the interview, Bell discussed her work in writing a drug education curriculum for the school district and her efforts to help children resist using drugs. She noted supportive groups in the Mankato area along with discussing the chronology of drug education during the 1970s and 1980s. Furthermore, she explained how the program changed from teaching scare tactics to helping students make positive decisions concerning chemical use.

This oral history interview was conducted as a requirement for a graduate level course entitled Current Issues in Public Education at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota.
