Abstract:

This collection consists of the records of the Nu Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, of Mankato, Minnesota. This was a national women's teachers association, and had chapters in cities throughout the United States. Included in the collection are biographies of Nu Chapter members, information on their teaching careers, newspaper clippings, meeting minutes, and obituaries of members who passed away. The audiocassette included in the collection contains the essays "As I Recall the Founding of the Nu Chapter" by Eleanor Beibl and "As I Recall the Teaching in a Rural School" by Rhea McCarthy.

Historical Note:

The Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma was organized in March of 1953. This group was the Mankato branch of Delta Kappa Gamma, which is a national honor society for women in education. By 1964, there were thirty-two members in the Nu Chapter. In the beginning, meetings were held at members' homes, but later took place at the Altador Tea Room, the Mankato State College, and the Viking Motel.

The subjects that most concerned the Nu Chapter were trends in education, teacher welfare, community responsibility, and foreign cultures. The Nu Chapter used a rose as their symbol, and incorporated the colors of red and gold. Many prominent educators from area schools and colleges were members of the Nu Chapter. Grace Armstrong and Effie Conkling, two well-known professors at Mankato State College were influential in the Nu Chapter.

Historical information obtained from the collection.
