Abstract:

The Peter Peterson collection contains letters written by Peterson during his enlistment in World War One as a Private. Peterson served in various military outposts throughout France as a United States Army medic. The letters were written to relatives in Mapleton, Minnesota. In the correspondence, Peterson detailed living conditions and experiences in Camp Dodge, Iowa, Fort Ripley, Kansas, Camp Kearny, California, Camp Merritt, New Jersey, and Benjamin Harrison, Indiana between April 1918 and July 1918, and at military outposts during the war between August 1918 and April 1919. Two of the letters were written in Norwegian but have been translated into English. Furthermore, some of the envelopes display the Army's official censor seal.
