This collection consists of a typescript of the autobiography of Andrew Friend, of Garden City, Minnesota. The item is entitled "The Life of Mr. Friend", and was compiled in 1916. In his autobiography, Friend discusses his involvement in building sawmills and gristmills in southern Minnesota, the defense of New Ulm during the Dakota Conflict, and the operation of his flourmill at Garden City.
Andrew Friend was born in 1835 in Etna, Penobscot County Maine. He moved to Blue Earth County, Minnesota in 1957. While in Minnesota, Friend built several sawmills and gristmills. He also served in the defense of New Ulm during the 1862 Dakota Conflict. From 1874 to 1912, Friend operated a flourmill at Garden City, Minnesota. Friend died in Garden City, Minnesota, in November 1916.
