Abstract:

The Maurice J. Nelson collection contains photocopies of newspaper clippings and articles written by Nelson. The news clippings provide information on Nelson's childhood in Hutchinson, Minnesota and the naming of Nelson Hall at Mankato State College in May 1968. Furthermore, the collection includes his documentation of witnessing the fire at Old Main on 5 February 1922, his efforts to establish a youth center named the Alpine Attic in Mankato, and a biographical sketch of Nelson presented at his retirement in May 1959.

Biographical Note:

Nelson instructed industrial arts students at Mankato State College from 1918 to 1959. He was born 3 April 1891 in Hutchinson, Minnesota. From 1915-1918 Nelson was a teacher at Virginia, Minnesota. In 1918, he joined the faculty of Mankato Normal School and remained a faculty member until retiring in 1959.

Nelson married Anne Clark, a fellow Normal School teacher, in 1923. While working for the school, he continued to further his education. Nelson completed his Bachelor of Science degree in 1935 at the Stout Institute in Menomonie, Wisconsin, and he earned his M.S. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1937. In 1968, Mankato State College paid tribute to Nelson's dedication by naming Nelson Hall in his honor. Nelson died in April 1976.
