Myers, Aaron. Papers, undated. SMHC Manuscript Collection 1343. 1 folder, 12 pages.
This collection consists of items pertaining to Aaron Myers and his role in the 1862 Dakota Uprising. A typescript of Myers' experiences in the fighting near Lake Shetek, Minnesota, is included in the collection. This undated typescript was dictated to his son Arthur, and is titled "An Account of the Lake Shetek Massacre". Newspaper clippings from the Mankato Free Press that describe the Lake Shetek affair are also included in the collection. They are from 1962 commemorative editions of the Free Press, and describe Myers' role in the Dakota Conflict. The information found in these newspaper clippings was taken from the typescript.
In 1858, Aaron Meyers moved from Wisconsin to Mantorville, Minnesota, where he joined a group of settlers who journeyed west as the Dakota Land Company. Meyers was among the first homesteaders in Amiret Township, south of Marshall, Minnesota. Two years later, Myers and his family moved to a homestead north of Lake Shetek, Minnesota. Lake Shetek was the site of attacks during the 1862 Dakota Uprising, and the Myers family was involved in the fighting.
