The Peter Geschwind collection consists of items pertaining to his work in the Sleepy Eye, Minnesota as well as some personal items. The collection contains The Charter of the City of Sleepy Eye with appended ordinances through 1907, manuscripts written by Geschwind about his views concerning the Ku Klux Klan and more specifically the Klan in southern Texas, and an undated photograph of Geschwind. Additionally, the collection contains numerous documents ranging from land deeds, to the will of Gertrude Krier, his mother, and an affidavit about William Cutting Laborer. Laborer served with Faxon's Rangers in Sibley County, Minnesota during the 1862 Dakota Conflict.

Biographical Note:

Peter Geschwind was born in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on 6 April 1852. In 1871, he and his mother immigrated to the United States. He lived in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota during 1872 but moved to Wisconsin to work for five years. Following his work in Wisconsin, Geschwind returned to Sleepy Eye and became the city's assessor for eight years, postmaster for seven years, the city's first municipal judge, a city clerk, and a member of the city council. He married Amelia Piehl in 1879. The couple had ten children. Geschwind died in Sleepy Eye on 1 October 1938.
