"A History of the Kiwanis Club and Camp Patterson". Pamphlet, 1980. SMHC Manuscript Collection 1317. 2 booklets, 26 pages each.
This collection consists of two copies of a pamphlet, published in 1980, which outlines the founding of the Kiwanis Clubs and the history of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Mankato, and its summer project, Camp Patterson. The pamphlet traces the history of the Mankato Kiwanis, and highlights many of their community service endeavors. Much of the pamphlet was written by Theodore L. Nydahl, former professor of history at Mankato State University.
Kiwanis International was formed in 1915 in Detroit, with the stated purpose to "devote itself to good rather than greed, to service rather than selfishness." The Mankato club formed in February of 1921, with the same stated purpose.
The Downtown Kiwanis Club of Mankato is involved in many community service operations, one of which is Camp Patterson. Camp Patterson, which is located on Lake Washington, was organized to give underprivileged boys and girls a camp experience. The Downtown Kiwanis Club of Mankato also conducted other projects for the Mankato community, including donating books to the local library, publishing travelogues, and informing the community about the danger of Dutch elm disease.
