Mankato Rehabilitation Center, Mankato, Minnesota. Papers, 1950 - 1978. SMHC Manuscript Collection 1262. 1 hollinger, .43 cubic feet.

Abstract:

This collection consists of reports and photographs that were produced by the Mankato Rehabilitation Center, a facility for assisting the developmentally disabled. The annual reports from 1959 until 1978 are part of the collection. The reports contain financial information, staff lists, program developments, and charts showing how the individual programs are utilized. Also included in the collection are brochures, newspaper clippings, a typescript of a history of Open Arms Day Activity Center, and photographs and negatives of the Mankato Rehabilitation Center's clients and facilities.

Historical Note:

The Mankato Rehabilitation Center was established in 1953 by Mankato residents interested in assisting the disabled. The initial function was to provide physical therapy, which was done in space provided by the National Citizens Bank. The functions expanded to include a comprehensive program of physical therapy, job placement services, and job skill education. These functions were formalized in the move to a new center on Honeymead property in 1958. The official programs offered at that time were Occupational Therapy, Speech and Hearing Therapy, and Work Evaluation and Placement Services. By 1977, the new center on Map Drive provided for expanded services, and Sheltered Employment Service on a regional and branch basis was being offered.

Historical information obtained from the collection.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of items obtained from the Mankato Rehabilitation Center. Included in the collection are the annual reports of the Center. These reports are from the years 1959 until 1978, and contain financial information, staff lists, and statistics on program usage.

A large number of photographs and negatives are also part of the collection. Most of these photographs are of the clients of the Rehabilitation center, and the facilities that they were using. Many of the photographs are undated, but those that contain dates are from 1960 until about 1967. Other subjects in the pictures include the Women's Auxiliary, a Christmas party, and the thrift shop operated by the Women's Auxiliary. Slides of the Mankato Jaycees "Toys for Tots" program are also included.

Other items included in the collection are: newspaper clippings from 1952 until 1955 and undated, a photocopy of a history of the Open Arms Day Activity Center written by Mary Hammar in 1970, and the layout for an undated promotional brochure.
