Mills, Lucius Denning, 1848 - 1936 and Others. "Reminiscences of Pioneer Life [1848 - 1933]." Reminiscences, 1933. SMHC Manuscript Collection 119. 1 folder, 49 leaves.
The Lucius Denning Mills collection holds a typed copy of an unpublished manuscript entitled "Reminiscences of Pioneer Life" compiled by Mills. Mills recalled his family living in Illinois before migrating to the area around Garden City, Minnesota. Also, he discussed living conditions in Mankato, Minnesota for the year 1854, the Dakota Conflict and subsequent mass hanging in Mankato, and the hardships and joys experienced by pioneers on the Minnesota frontier during the nineteenth-century.
Besides the personal recollections of Mills, the collection contains a Mills family history compiled by Lida Mills, a reminiscence by Edward P. Mills about his youth around Garden City, Minnesota, and Rena Baker, a friend of Lucius's wife Marie Mills, described the pioneering days of early Mankato when she came from Illinois in 1866.
Lucius Denning Mills was born to Samuel Titus and Permelia Mills in Buffalo Grove, Cook County, Illinois in 1848. The family moved to the area around present day Garden City, Minnesota during 1854. Following a childhood on the family's farm, Mills married Marie Antonette Crane on 23 December 1874. They farmed his parents land and operated the Mills Lake Nursery. In 1912, he sold the farm but retained the nursery and moved into Garden City. Mills died in Garden City on 21 March 1936.
