Abstract:

The Charles I. Mundale correspondence spans a range of years but is focused on the 1960s. Corresponding primarily with Robert C. Wright and John Hodowonic; Mundale and his friends wrote of their daily lives and the people, events, and ideas around them. All three primary correspondents worked in college or university settings and at one point all worked at Mankato State College. The correspondence came about as they each left MSC. Some topics include the Vietnam War, life in Mexico (Mundale spent a year there), and Mankato and its environs.

Bibliograhpic Note:

Charles I. Mundale was born in Faribault County, Minnesota in 1929. As an adult he spent time in the U.S. Air Force, working as a newspaper reporter, and as a college and university professor.

In 1950 Mundale received his B.A. from Mankato State Teachers College and then went on to Syracuse University and received an A.B. in 1952. After working as a newspaper reporter in Mankato and Worthington, Minnesota for several years, Mundale returned to school. He received an M.A. from Washington University in 1962 and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1971.

Dr. Mundale began his academic career at Mankato State College in 1963 where he taught Political Science. After a few years at MSC, he went back to school to work on his Ph.D. He returned to the Political Science department at MSC while working on his degree and remained until 1977.

Dr. Mundale went on to teach at several other institutions including Macalester College and the University of St. Thomas both in the Twin Cities. In 1973 he married Susan Wadd and has several children. Dr. Mundale now resides in Minneapolis.

Scope and Content:

Most of the correspondence dates from 1961-1972. There are a few newspaper clippings and notes in with the correspondence. Several early letters tell about a visit to the writer Frederick Manfred.
