Miller, George J, 1880-1973. Collection, 1865-1988. MSU Manuscript Collection 302. 5 Records Boxes, 2 Archives Boxes and 2 Oversize Boxes, 7 Cubic Feet.

Abstract:

This collection documents the life of George J Miller, a nationally known geographer, who spent much of his professional career at the Mankato State Normal School (later State Teachers College). Miller attained national attention through his research and publications as well as his work co-founding the National Council for Geographic Education. The collection primarily focuses on Miller's professional life but includes some personal information. The professional material includes field trip notes, maps, photographs, correspondence, speeches, publication information, and professional organization materials. The few personal items include photographs, diplomas, and a tape-recorded interview with George J Miller.

Biographical Note:

George J Miller, a national recognized leader in the field of Geography, was born in Sturgis, Michigan on 7 February 1880. He attended Michigan State Normal School in Ypsilanti, Michigan and graduated in June 1900. After teaching for a few years, Miller returned to school in 1908 and received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Chicago. While at the University of Chicago, he taught classes in the School of Education and led a summer camping trip out West for young men. In 1913, Miller accepted a position at the Mankato State Normal School in Mankato, Minnesota where he taught Geography until 1948. Upon leaving Mankato State Teachers College, Miller joined the faculty at the University of Indiana at Bloomington. He retired from teaching in 1951.

While teaching was a large aspect of his professional life, George J Miller was also very active in other professional pursuits. He was very involved in research and writing of professional books and papers. Miller traveled throughout Europe, the United States, and Canada on field trips. Much of his research involved field notes and photographs of his destinations. As a writer, he wrote numerous works including co-authoring the college textbook, The Geography of North America. There were three editions of this textbook published between 1928 and 1954. He worked with Dr. Almon E. Parkins for the first two editions and Dr. Bert Hudgins for the third. In addition to the textbook, he wrote a pamphlet series called "Essentials of Geography" and numerous other articles on a variety of subjects.

Another area of interest for Miller in the field of Geography was professional organizations. He was involved with several organizations, but most of his time was spent working with the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE). The NCGE was started in 1914 by George J Miller, and Raymond H. Whitbeck, of the University of Wisconsin, to fill a gap in the field of geographic education. The idea gained support nationally. The first meeting of the organization was held on 31 December 1915. Originally called the National Council for Geography Teachers, Miller served as the organizations Secretary from 1916-1929, Vice-President in 1932 and President in 1933. He also acted as editor of the Journal of Geography from 1920-1949 and assistant editor for two additional years. In 1938, Miller was awarded the distinguished service award by the NCGE. In 1975, they named the award after him, in honor of his work with the organization.

In 1907, George Miller married Eula Selborn Flint with whom he had one daughter, Melba. In 1956, a few years after George Miller retired, Eula Miller died. George married E(dith) Joan Miller a Geography lecturer at Indiana University in 1958. Soon after their marriage, the Millers moved to Illinois where Dr. (E. Joan) Miller taught Geography at Illinois State University. On 23 July 1973 George J Miller died in Normal, Illinois at the age of ninety-three.

NOTE: George J Miller did not have a middle name. The letter J is not an abbreviation and therefore is not punctuated.

Scope and Content:

This collection documents the life of George J Miller, a nationally known geographer, who spent much of his professional career at the Mankato State Normal School (later State Teachers College). Miller attained national attention through his research and publications as well as through his work in the founding of the National Council for Geographic Education. The collection primarily focuses on Miller's professional life but includes some personal information.

The collection is divided into nine different series and is arranged alphabetically.

Account Books/Diaries: This series contains Miller's personal diaries and account books for the years 1909-1973. The account books range in date from 1909-1962 and document Miller's personal and professional expenses (particularly research related expenses). The 1912-1913 Accounting Book from the University of Chicago-School of Education details the cost of a boy's field trip out west. The diaries range in date from 1917-1973. Some diaries are single years while others are multiple year volumes.

Field Trips/Notes:This series contains Miller's notes relating to various trips he undertook and are primarily research related. The notes usually detail where he was and what photographs he took. The field notes in this series are related to the photographs in the Photographs and Negatives series.

Maps (Marked): This series contains maps that Miller used for planning trips. All maps have been marked with trip routes.

Maps (Unmarked):This series contains maps that Miller collected during his life. None of these maps are marked with trip routes, and it is unknown if they were used during any of his travels.

Personal Items:The materials in this series relate more to Miller's personal rather than professional life. The series includes organization related materials (Masons, American Protective League, and Minute Men), personal items (glasses case, map portfolio, suitcase), diplomas, certificates, photographs, materials relating to his work at MSTC, and family information. This series also contains a recorded interview with George J Miller conducted by Dr. Katheryne Wittemore.

Photographs and Negatives:This series contains the photographs (and corresponding negatives) that George J Miller took for research purposes during his travels. Most of the photographs were numbered and/or labeled by Miller and are divided by state or trip. The photographs in this series are related to the field notes in the Field Trips/Notes series. The size of the photographs is generally consistent at 3x4 inches. Unless otherwise noted all negatives are included. A few photographs are missing from the collection. Discrepancies are noted in the finding aid and in the collection.

Professional Organizations:This series focuses on materials relating to Miller's memberships in various professional organizations. The primary organization represented in this series is the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) which Miller co-founded in 1914. In this series there is information on NCGE annual meetings, NCGE history, and some correspondence. Included in this series are several awards that Miller received including the Distinguished Service Award from the Geographic Society of Chicago and the Distinguished Service Award from the National Council for Geography Teachers (the previous name of the NCGE).

Publication Related Material:George J Miller had an extensive publishing career during his life. This series reflects the numerous articles and books he wrote as well as his role as editor of the Journal of Geography. Included with these materials are copies of articles, correspondence, contracts, and research notes relating to his various publications. In addition to the works by Miller, there are also articles and newspaper clippings about him in the collection.

Speeches/Correspondence/Course Materials:This series contains Miller's general correspondence, course materials, and speeches he gave over the years. The correspondence focuses on the history of the NCGE, Miller's publications, and condolence letters received by Miller's widow, E. Joan Miller, following his death. The course materials were developed for classes Miller taught at Mankato State Teachers College (MSTC). This series also contains a variety of speeches that Miller gave to various organizations over the years. Speech topics include: history of the NCGE, ASIA, Geography in Education, Europe, MSTC, and Geography and the World.
