Abstract:

The collection consists of items from the Mass Communication Department at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The collection is made up of correspondence, scholarship information, the Communicator Department Newsletter, curriculum notes and course syllabi. In addition correspondence, memorandums, and program notes for the Mass Communication Department's annual Media Day are included.

Historical Note:

The Mass Communication program at Minnesota State University Mankato emerged in the early 1970s as part of the College of Arts and Humanities, beginning as the Mass Communication Institute. The program was renamed the Mass Communications Department in 1993. Currently, the Mass Communication Department offers bachelor's degrees in Mass Communication, with Journalism, Public Relations, and Media Studies being offered as specialized options.

Scope and Content:

This collection has been processed into two series based upon the Mass Communication Department records and the records of the Media Day program. They are organized alphabetically first, and then chronologically by year.

Mass Communication Department records: This series contains material from 1972 to 2004, reflecting changes in Mass Communication courses and curriculum, scholarships, equipment requests, the Department name change, and the Communicator Newsletter from 1979 to 1999.

Media Day records: This series contains material regarding the Mass Communications Department annual Media Day program from 1972-1999. Correspondence, program notes, department memorandums, and media advertisements and brochures are included in the collection.
