Registrar's Office. Collection, 1870-Ongoing. MSU Archives Collection 100. 43 small boxes, 3 loose volumes, 6 records center cartons, and 2 small newspaper boxes.

Abstract:

The Registrar's Office collection consists of a variety of information produced by Minnesota State University and its predecessor institutions since 1870. Included are documents concerning students who graduated from the institution, campus class schedules, application forms, office correspondence, student grades, and policies of the Registrar's Office. The majority of this collection dates from 1870 through the early 1960s. Most documents post 1960 are primarily class schedules of weekend, evening, mini, summer, and fall through spring quarters or semesters. Items have been arranged by chronology or alphabetical order. Large portions of this collection are restricted from public access.

Scope and Content:

The Registrar's Office collection has been divided into six series. Items in each section have been arranged by chronology and topic. Portions of these documents are restricted from the public. The series are: Class Schedules; Correspondence, Memoranda, and Reports; Miscellaneous, Policies and Publications; Other Records; Permanent Student Records; and Student Personal Information Forms [Enrollment Applications], Dead File.

Class Schedules: 1870-Ongoing: This series contains class schedules from 1870 through the present. They are arranged chronologically and contain regular weekday campus courses plus summer school classes, mini classes, and Saturday/evening classes. A large portion of these contain actual class enrollment information compiled by workers in the Registrar's Office primarily from the 1870s through the 1970s.

Correspondence, Memoranda, and Reports, 1936-1981: Contained in this series are documents sent to and from the Registrar's Office. Portions of these papers are restricted.

Policies and Publications, c. 1947-1967: These items are policies and publications from the Registrar's Office that contain regulations or general information about Mankato State Teachers College.

Miscellaneous Records, 1870-1961: Documents in this series are partially restricted but contain information about the daily attendance records of students, lists of graduates from the college and those granted diplomas, student pledges to teach for two years following graduation, and the reports by school faculty/administrators on the appearance and competence of students to teach in area schools.

Permanent Student Records, 1870-c. 1960: This series is restricted. It is arranged by surnames. Contained in this series are approximately 25,000 transcripts of students who attended Mankato State Normal School, Mankato State Teachers College, or Mankato State College between the 1870s and the early 1960s. These cards are restricted for general use but some information is available upon request. Information contained on the cards varies by year but generally contains the individual's name, age, birthplace, parent(s) name(s) and occupations, previous educational experiences, programs and terms enrolled, teaching experience, and miscellaneous personal information. A portion of the more recent records have the student's photograph attached. The bulk of this collection is from the 1870s through the 1930s.

Student Personal Information Forms [Enrollment Applications], Dead File, 1932-1937: This series is restricted. It is arranged by surname. Contained are personal information forms written by prospective high school students who wished to be admitted to the college. The forms include personal statements concerning why each student wanted to teach, their favorite and least favorite classes in high school and basic information about their families.

Restrictions:

This collection is partially RESTRICTED for research purposes. The researcher assumes full responsibility for observing all copyright, property and libel laws as they apply.
