Library Services

Biolinks
"A search engine for scientists, with links to journals, organizations, companies and more. It spiders the web and has human-categorized results." -Searchenginewatch.com

ChemCenter
"Links to the ACS's many professional services (career, membership, and grants) are arranged on a single page for easy reference. The 'Conferences and Communications' page provides links to meetings, conferences, newsletters, policy groups, and outreach programs. The 'Education Center' provides access to the ACS's extensive range of instructional offerings. Free registration, though not currently required, will be necessary to access special services in the future." -Scout Report (Copyright Internet Scout Project, 1994-2000. http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/)

ChemFinder
Database retrieves name, molecular formula, molecular weight, and CAS registry numbers as well as links to public source sites which have additional information about the compound.

ChemWeb
Allows free searching of chemistry journals, grants access to selected reference materials (e.g., chemistry dictionaries), provides links to reviewed chemistry web sites, and has created 'forums' of information by divisions of chemistry. Must join at no cost to access resources. Includes access to Beilstein Abstracts.

"Beilstein Abstracts is a free database of titles and abstracts of approximately 600,000 articles from 140 journals in organic and related chemistry from 1980 to the present. After free registration with ChemWeb, users may browse or search the database by author, title, abstract, and several modifiers. Search returns include title, author, source, document type, language, and an abstract." -Scout Report (Copyright Internet Scout Project, 1994-2000. http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/)

Chemie.DE
Directory and search engine for information about chemistry.

E-print Network
"The Department of Energy's PrePRINT Network is a searchable gateway to preprint servers that deal with scientific and technical disciplines of concern to DOE, such as physics, materials, and chemistry, as well as portions of biology, environmental sciences and nuclear medicine. (Generally, preprints are manuscripts that have not yet been published, but may have been reviewed and accepted; submitted for publication; or intended for publication and being circulated for comment.)"

General Chemistry Resources
Includes a database for annotated general chemistry web sites.

GrayLit Network
"The GrayLIT Network makes the gray literature of U.S. Federal Agencies easily accessible over the Internet. [Gray literature is defined as] foreign or domestic open source material that usually is available through specialized channels and may not enter normal channels or systems of publication, distribution, bibliographic control, or acquisition by booksellers or subscription agents." GrayLIT Network provides access to Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) Report Collection, DOE Information Bridge Report Collection (covers physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, and renewable energy), and EPA - National Environmental Publications Internet Site (NEPIS).

Information Retrieval in Chemistry-WWW Server
"A new discovery by the Scout Team, the Information Retrieval in Chemistry-WWW Server is a resource site devoted to chemistry for 'both novice and advanced Internet users.' Resources are divided into several categories including Chemistry, Chemistry-related sections, Internet resources, and mailing lists. The chemistry sites are divided into over 50 types of chemistry, from marine to colloidal. Chemistry-related sections include bioscience, mathematics, and geoscience." -Scout Report (Copyright Internet Scout Project, 1994-2000. http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/)

InfoSurf: Chemistry
Collection of chemistry web sites, with short annotations, organized by categories such as 'chemical data sources' and 'super sites.' Created and maintained by the University of California Santa Barbara library.

IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology
"Compiled by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and originally published in print form by Blackwell Science, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Compendium of Chemical Terminology has recently been made available online for free. The searchable compendium, popularly referred to as the 'Gold Book,' contains 'nearly 7000 terms, with authoritative definitions, spanning the whole range of chemistry.' The search screen provides easy access to definitions." -Scout Report (Copyright Internet Scout Project, 1994-2000. http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/)

Links for Chemists
"Over 7500 links to WWW chemistry resources." Categorizes web sites in side frame. No descriptions of the resources and lacks information about access restrictions.

NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Chemistry Web Book
"For information on thermodynamic data for over 5,000 chemical compounds and on ion-energetics data for over 10,000 chemical compounds, NIST's Chemistry WebBook is available for searching. Compounds can be searched by name, chemical formula, or CAS registry number. Information on enthalpy of formation, heat capacity, entropy, ionization potential, and appearance potential is available." -Scout Report (Copyright Internet Scout Project, 1994-2000. http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/)

Science Reference Room: Index to Physical, Chemical and Other Property Data
"This reference guide from Arizona State University's Noble Science and Engineering Library amounts to 'an index to selected library and internet resources that contain chemical, physical, thermodynamic, mechanical, toxicological, and safety data.' Starting with a list of suggested standard reference sources that may be found in most technical libraries, this reference guide goes on to include a vast reservoir of library books and Internet sites where a user may locate specific information." -Scout Report (Copyright Internet Scout Project, 1994-2000. http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/)

Scout Report
The Scout Report reviews web sites, which are "most valuable to the education community." Records will include reviews and subject headings. Can search or browse for web sites.

TOXNET
Collection of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related fields.

The Virtual Chemistry Center
Extensive collection of links. Short summaries follow the lengthy list. Hosted by University of California Irvine Science Library.

WebElements
"Dr. Mark J. Winter, Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield (UK) maintains this web-based periodic table. While there are no shortage of periodic tables on the web, WebElements is one of the oldest and best. Key data such as atomic weight and number are just the beginning at this site. In addition to complete, WebElements includes chemical, isotope, spectroscopy, electronic, biological (including abundance in humans) and geological data. Graphical crystal structure is also provided in static, VRML, and Chime based views." -Scout Report (Copyright Internet Scout Project, 1994-2000. http://scout.cs.wisc.edu/)
